This chart shows the Federal Reserve's balance sheet (total assets) over time. When the Fed buys assets, it is essentially expanding its balance sheet to pump liquidity into the economy. Data retrieved from the Federal Reserve Economic Data (FRED). Recession periods are highlighted to indicate economic downturns.
